This month, on the 12th of September, we will experience the Kohala Loop again with its twisty, winding roads and varied climates, but this time starting and ending the run in Waimea. I wanted to extend the run to Hilo, but restaurants there are closing once more due to the surge in COVID cases. We will lunch in Waimea instead. Still working out the logistics but there are several choices.
We will assemble at 10:00 at the back parking lot of the Parker Ranch Center, behind the food court and Foodland, with ample parking, bathrooms, Starbucks, and gas available in town.
After signing our releases and going through our informational and safety meeting, we are scheduled to leave heading out of town, downhill, on Kawaihae Road to the junction of 270, Akoni Pule Highway, and proceed to Harbor Gallery in Kawaihae with restroom facilities and the Big Island Hawaii PCA Goodie Store where you can get t-shirts, logo items like pins, badges, patches and key fobs, and the best selection of local artwork! We should arrive there around 11 and leave at 11:30 to head North through Hawi to Kapa’au, around Noon, where we turn uphill onto Route 250, Kohala Mountain Road, for the run back to Waimea where we can meet up at one of several local restaurants for lunch after 12:30.
If you want to hit up one of the local Farmer’s Markets in Waimea before we meet, they open around 7 A.M. with a full selection of local produce and craft items. Come join us for another fun day on the Big Island!
