March is coming up

Starting at the Old Kona Airport near the entrance, we will assemble starting at 10:00 so we can sign waivers, including the new Communicable Disease Waiver, and get organized for our Driving Tour which will take several hours until we reach our destination in Kawaihae. Remember to print as well as signing the forms LEGIBLY for our records which must be kept for about 8 years by legal insurance standards! With Winter Weather unpredictable on the Hilo side this time of year (there are flash flood warnings up for the next few days) a cruise North through Kohala is the safest bet for sunshine and dry roads. We will again split into 2 groups if we have more than 15 cars, with radio communication front and back with our leads and sweeps.

We should depart around 10:30 and take Kuakini Highway out of the park to Palani Road and turn left, uphill as it changes to Mamalahoa Highway, Hwy. 190 all the way past Saddle Road and continuing into the town of Waimea, about 45 minutes away. There we will stop behind the Parker Ranch Shopping Center in their parking lot on the Mauna Kea Side, where there are bathrooms and refreshments available for you, including Starbucks, Burger King and Foodland Supermarket. If you wish to take a quick jog up the street, you can go to Church Row where the Cherry Trees are in full bloom right now! Great place for a photo op! If we get more snow on Mauna Kea, that will also be a great place for photos in the back parking lot! We should be there in Waimea from about 11:30 until we leave for North Kohala around noon.

Driving through town, we can never get all through the traffic lights, so we will assemble again in front of the HPA Upper Campus along HWY. 250 after turning right at the Wai’aka Bridge intersection. After a few minutes beside the road on the shoulder, we will continue on the picturesque and challenging Upper Kohala Road until we reach the intersection with Hawi Hill Road, where we will turn downhill and proceed to Hawi Village and gather next to the park, with restrooms nearby. We should arrive around 12:30 for a 30 minute break.

After we stretch our legs for the last leg, we take off around 1:00 along the Akoni Pule Highway, Hwy. 270, looking for breaching whales along the way along the coast, until we reach our final destination, Seafood Bar in Kawaihae about 1:30 with food, drink, bathrooms and ample parking. Harbor Gallery is only 200 yards away, with t-shirts and a wide variety of club logo items for you to purchase and benefit the club. Display your club pride!
