October Fest update

Update from Gunner Mench, President (12 October)

Next Saturday is coming upon us quickly.

Sadly, there is no place to accommodate us at this time to share an Oktoberfest German meal together at this time, so we will not hold an event after our driving portion is complete.

People are welcome to picnic at Old Airport Park after the event on their own while practicing social distancing, wearing facemasks while not consuming food or beverages, and washing or sanitizing hands frequently per the most recent advisories.

We will be meeting up in the rear parking lot of Prince Kuhio Mall where we did in August, starting at 10 am. We plan to leave by 11 and proceed to Mauna Kea Park, getting there by noon And leaving by 12:30 via the twisty, winding road through Waiki’i Ranch, down to Mamalahoa Highway and heading South through Palani Road, finishing up at Old Kona Airport before 1:30.

You re encouraged to wear your Lederhosen, Dirndl or other German clothing if you have it! Mark Senft and I are planning on it! See you next Saturday in Hilo at 10.

Gunner Mench, President

From your tour officer (Mark Senft) (October 7, 2020)

Talking with Gunner tonight and just finding out Kona brew will cater out.
I agree with the Hilo start, Hilo Starbucks 10-10:30am
-Over the saddle to Mauna Kea State Park to re-form and a personal break, about 11:30am
-On to Old A’s park in Kona to meet up with our Oktober fest luncheon, about 12noon. food at 1:00
So, we gather at Old A’s after the run, Brew Pub brings catered meal to the park.

Eat picnic style the grass in small groups. A nice german boy wearing leather shorts plays his accordion.
See you there

We are having a difficult time making this happen during this tough year!

The Lederhosen fit, got the accordion out, but now we have no place to hold our event!

Kona Brewing cannot accommodate us at this time. Groups larger than 10 are not allowed.
We cannot gather at parks or public places in groups larger than 10!

The best we can do is assemble in Hilo, perhaps the parking lot of Prince Kuhio Mall, and drive to Kona, and finish up somewhere in the open like Old Kona Airport.

We might be able to put together a plate lunch of Oktoberfest German food, working on that with several sources, for a to go setup.
This would be for 2 weeks from now, on Saturday, October 17th starting at 10 in Hilo and going over Saddle, stopping at Mauna Kea Park, and driving Waikii Ranch Road to Mamalahoa Highway and ending up at Old Kona Airport .

More details will emerge in the next few days, I will keep you posted.

Aloha, stay healthy, and stay safe!
